When we quote, some customers may be confused about the difference between the casting pattern and the sand mold. Here, we will briefly introduce the differences between the two.

For the sand casting process, the pattern is a necessary and indispensable type for production tools. The patterns have similar shapes to castings, but usually they are assembled from several parts.

The conventional materials for casting models are wood, resin (plastic), aluminum, iron and alloy steel. Wooden patterns are used for very small batch production. Even just for making samples. Resin models are not expensive and have a very long service life. Therefore, we usually use them in mass production, especially for the production of large castings. Meanwhile, we adopt aluminum patterns in artificial green sand casting process. At the same time, we employ iron patterns in automatic forming lines and shell forming processes. All alloy steel patterns adopt permanent forming process.

In the casting production process, we use a set of pattern to produce many identical sand molds, for example 100 sets. Then, we pour liquid metal into these sand molds, and thus produce 100 metal castings. Therefore, sand molds are products made from patterns, and castings are products made from molds.

Some sand molds are recyclable, such as raw sand and resin sand. Some are not, such as shell molds. This is why shell mold castings are more expensive.
